BPW Galway Candle Lighting Supper 2018
Una McDonagh Enthralling and Entertaining in BPW Galway Keynote Address
Last Friday night in the Harbour Hotel, the Business and Professional Women’s Club (BPW) Galway held their annual Candlelighting Supper as part of their International Federation’s tribute to members and women throughout the world.
The event a celebration and commemoration held annually around the globe in the month of February saw Galway President Valerie Murphy deliver the global Presidents message which is distributed to over 80 clubs worldwide.
The evening was tinged with some sadness but fond and happy memories as founding member and first President of the Galway Club Breda Ryan was beautifully remembered in a touching tribute by Maresa Wren which was followed by a minutes silence. Many of the past Presidents of the Club attended the evening in a tribute to Breda on the night.
Following the ceremony of lighting various candles, each with a different theme and significance by members of the Galway Club, guests were treated to a delicious meal before Una McDonagh took to the podium to deliver her keynote address.
Una’s address focused on her career from her initial summer job with Supermac’s as a young girl to her position now as Managing Director of an expanding, evolving Irish empire. The theme of Una’s address focused on change and the importance of moving with the times, being a leader not a follower in business, building relationships with staff and customers and the importance of a happy home and family.
Her anecdotes and tales of how she and husband Pat have built the brand Supermac’s from one outlet in Ballinasloe in 1978 to over 108 restaurants, 70 Papa Johns location, 4 major service station sites and expansion into the hotel trade in recent years was both enthralling and entertaining.
Speaking about the address Valerie Murphy said “We were honoured to welcome Una as special guest speaker to our event, her natural and very personal ability to engage with her audience in the room saw her receive a well deserved standing ovation in recognition of all that she has achieved as a businesswoman, mother and active member of her community. Una is a lady that many businesswomen and men can take inspiration and encouragement from regardless of what stage they are at in their career, we really are grateful to Una for taking time out of her busy schedule to join us and support our event.”
The next social and networking event on the BPW Calendar is their Annual Summer lunch taking place in the Ardilaun Hotel on May 25th with guest speaker Galway business woman and Dragon Den investor Chanelle McCoy. The Summer Lunch marks the start of the busy summer calendar of socialising in Galway. More details on this event will be released in the coming weeks.
